There are few wildlife experiences on Earth as pure as watching wild dolphins in their natural habitat — and Mauritius's west coast is one of the best places in the world to do it. This half-day speed boat trip is built entirely around getting you close to the marine life, as efficiently as possible.
Because a speed boat reaches the sighting grounds faster than a catamaran, you spend more time actually with the animals and less time getting there. The trip includes a swim with wild Spinner and Bottlenose dolphins in open water, a stretch of whale watching further offshore, and a snorkeling stop near the reef on the way back.
Every encounter follows the Mauritius dolphin-watching code of conduct — no chasing, no harassing, no feeding. If the dolphins are relaxed and curious, they may swim close, and you can slip into the water to observe them from a respectful distance.

What You Might See
The west coast of Mauritius is one of the richest marine environments in the Indian Ocean. Here's what you're most likely to encounter.
Spinner Dolphins
Famous for their acrobatic spinning leaps, spinners travel in pods of 20–50 and are the most commonly sighted species in Tamarin Bay.
Bottlenose Dolphins
Larger and more curious, bottlenose dolphins often swim right alongside the boat, surfing the bow wave in smaller pods of 5–15.
Sperm Whales
The deep water off the west coast is a known route for sperm whales — the largest toothed predator on Earth. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed.
Beaked Whales
Several deep-diving beaked whale species are recorded in Mauritian waters. They are elusive and rarely seen, which makes any sighting special.

Your Half-Day on the Water
A focused 4–5 hour trip — early enough to catch the dolphins at their most active, brief enough to leave you the rest of your day.
Meet at the Departure Point
Arrive at the meeting point on the west coast — Black River or Tamarin. Meet your licensed skipper, complete a safety briefing, get fitted with life jackets, and collect your snorkeling gear. The sea is usually calm at this hour.
Depart by Speed Boat
Push off and head toward the dolphin grounds. Your skipper knows the pods' usual morning routes and times the trip around when the dolphins are most active. Because a speed boat travels faster than a catamaran, you reach the action sooner and spend more time with the animals.
Dolphin Encounter — Swim with Wild Dolphins
Slip into the water and swim alongside wild Spinner and Bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat. This is open water — not a pool or enclosure — and the encounter follows the Mauritius dolphin-watching code of conduct. If the pod is relaxed and curious, they may swim close.
Offshore Whale Watching
Head further offshore into deeper water to look for whales. Sightings aren't guaranteed on every trip, but the deep water off Mauritius's west coast is a known route for sperm whales and several beaked whale species. Your skipper scans for spouts and surfacing animals.
Reef Snorkeling Stop
Cruise back toward the coast for a snorkeling stop near the reef. Masks, snorkels, and fins are provided. The calm, shallow water here is suitable for most swimming abilities, and you'll likely spot tropical fish and coral.
Return Cruise & Refreshments
Head back to the departure point with refreshments served on board. Depending on conditions and how long the dolphins and whales stay in view, you'll be back between 11:00 AM and 12:00 PM — with the rest of your day still ahead.
